PROJECT ACCESS FOR JOHNSTON COUNTY
The goal of Project Access is to provide the opportunity for every Johnston County resident to visit a primary care physician. The services of Project Access are available to low-income, uninsured residents up to age 64, who are not eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, Worker’s Compensation, VA benefits, or any other type of health insurance plan or coverage. Care begins with a visit to a Family Care doctor who will refer you to Project Access should you qualify. Project Access physicians and Johnston Memorial Hospital will donate primary care, specialty services, including lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic testing and limited pharmacy coverage. Further details about Project Access are available at http://www.johnstonmemorial.org/jm.nsf/View/ProjectAccess.
For more information on Project Access and to see if you qualify for assistance, contact: Theressa Rose, Executive Assistant or Kathy Rogols, Executive Director at: 919-550-0011.
RACE FOR GRACE
This 5K road race in Raleigh was organized to bring attention to healthcare needs, homelessness, and hunger in our community. A foot race and golf tournament are held during the month of April each year to help raise money and awareness for these three problems. Registration forms are available from Horne or online at www.raceofgrace.org.
To help: Run or walk in the Race for Grace or play in the golf tournament. Volunteers are also needed on the day of the race (go to www.raceofgrace.org for more information or contact Patrick Tormey at 553-9887 / pattormey(at)yahoo.com).
BASIC NEEDS MINISTRY
This ministry provides free clothing to local people in need, as well as household goods to victims of disasters. Clothing gift certificates are distributed at over 260 locations, and fire certificates are redeemed for household goods and small appliances.
Basic Needs relies solely on unpaid volunteers; it pays no salaries. The youth group from HMUMC has volunteered at Basic Needs.
Although Basic Needs does not directly supply clothes to nonresidents, it does allow churches and nonprofits to pull clothing from its facility and ship it to a distant project. Children and families in Armenia and Haiti have received clothing from Basic Needs through work from HMUMC Missions.
To help you may donate money. Basic Needs must fundraise $35,000 a year; its long-term goal is to own its own building. Please donate clothing, toys, CDs, videos, books, small household goods. And please consider volunteering.
CLAYTON AREA MINISTRIES (CAM)
This ministry is organized primarily as a local food pantry, CAM also assists those in need with emergency utility bills. About a dozen area churches support CAM with funding and nonperishable food.
To help please donate canned goods or make a donation earmarked for CAM. Collection containers are located in Horne. CAM is located at 704 East Main Street in Clayton, and food can be dropped off there on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 3:00. Call them at 919-553-5654 to learn about volunteering.
CONTACT OF JOHNSTON COUNTY
This organization serves as the only crisis line in Johnston County. Trained volunteers provide a listening ear, and help people to talk if they want. They can also direct people to treatment in their local areas.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF JOHNSTON COUNTY
This organization is part of a worldwide Christian ministry that combines donated funds and materials with volunteer labor to build and renovate houses affordably. Homeowners invest hundreds of hours building their own and other Habitat houses. Houses are sold at no profit and are financed with low, no-interest loans. Mortgage payments finance more Habitat houses.
Habitat has opened a ReUse store on Central Street in Clayton. Habitat reuse centers take donated materials and resell them for up to 80% off original prices. New and used building materials are sold in excellent condition, with much of the donated inventory coming from contractors and suppliers. Proceeds fund the building of Habitat houses.
To help please donate leftover paint, wallpaper, fixtures, etc. to the Habitat Reuse Center--donations are tax deductible! Shop at the ReUse Center for great bargains on fixtures, shelving, tubs, faucets, and more. Horne UMC would like to get a group of people to regularly participate in Habitat Building projects. Please contact Patrick Tormey at pattormey(at)yahoo.com or call 919-553-9887 if you are interested. We can use people with electrical, plumbing, and carpentry skills, but this is a place to learn skills as well. If you want to paint, shingle a roof, hang drywall, clean up, or serve snacks, we have a job for you!
