The Walk to Emmaus
You are invited to be a part of a three-day spiritual journey that has blessed and strengthened the everyday Christian faith walk for so many of the members at Horne Memorial United Methodist Church.
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program’s approach seriously considers the model of Christ’s servanthood and encourages Christ’s disciples to act in ways appropriate to being “a servant of all.”
The Walk to Emmaus experience is a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by laity and clergy on the themes of God’s grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church as the Body of Christ. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special worship services, and daily Holy Communion. The Emmaus Walk begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday evening. Men and women attend separate walk weekends. During and after the weekend, Emmaus leaders encourage participants to meet regularly in small groups. The members of these groups challenge and support one another in faithful living.
The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus. As with these two disciples, it is hoped that your eyes will be opened to Christ along the road, and that He will be revealed to you in new and refreshing ways.
Horne Memorial United Methodist Church is a part of the Heart of Carolina Emmaus Community, which covers the Triangle area to Burlington and much of Eastern North Carolina. This fellowship is administered by the Upper Room division of the United Methodist Publishing House. However, this fellowship is ecumenical, and members of the community are from many different denominations. Its sister organization, Chrysalis, is the youth manifestation of the Walk to Emmaus and is open to all young people who have completed their freshmen year of high school.
